Turns and Twists in Flannery OConnors A Good Man Is Hard to Find Irony is a useful tool for giving stories unexpected turns and twists. In Flannery OConnors A Good Man Is Hard to Find, irony is used as a very effective literary tool; to guide the story in and out of what we think will happen. OConnor uses irony in this story to contradict statements and situations to expose a truth very much different from what we the reader would think to be true. OConnor use irony in several different forms, situational irony, dramatic irony and verbal irony to make the story unpredictable and interesting to read. In most every aspect of the story from beginning to end there is some type of ironic twist. The title itself is some what†¦show more content†¦OConnor does the same thing here; the grandmothers first action was to convince her son, Bailey, into going were she wanted to go, a selfish act, not a trait that we see a grandmother having. Also she thought out a plan to get what she wanted by acting as if she cared about her familys safety. Now l ooks here, Bailey........ see here, read this...Here this fellow that calls himself the Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed towards Florida and you read here what is says he did to these people(328). The grandmothers relationship right away to the reader is one that can not be trusted. Throughout the story you now question the grandmothers intentions, are they honest or selfish. By bringing up the Misfit early in the story this gives the reader insight to an event that might happen that the characters in the story do not have knowledge of. This is a type of irony called dramatic irony; it is mainly used to clue a reader in on something that is happening or going to happen that the characters in the story do not know about. The characters in this case believe that by avoiding traveling to Florida they will no longer have to worry about the chance of running into the Misfit.
